Aldi raises wages to attract new workers ahead of the holiday season’s hiring spree.
The grocery retailer is raising its national starting average wage to $15 an hour for open store roles and $19 an hour for open warehouse roles, according to a press release on Monday.
“As an award-winning employer, we recognize the importance of investing in our employees,” Dave Rinaldo, Aldi US Co-President, said in the statement. “Employees come to ALDI for a competitive pay and the opportunity to work for a growing national brand. They stay for the career potential and the satisfaction they feel because their work makes a difference in the communities they serve.”
Aldi also announced in its statement that it is hiring more than 20,000 new employees “to support its continued growth across the country and prepare for the busy holiday season.” New roles are available in both Aldi’s stores and warehouses. They include positions such as store assistant, cashier, inventory and warehouse assistant. The company has more than 2,100 stores and 25 warehouses across the United States.

To support holiday recruitment efforts, Aldi is hosting a national recruitment week from September 20-24, where stores and warehouses will hold interview events to fill job openings.
The company’s wage increases come shortly after grocery store workers hit a major wage milestone. Grocery store and restaurant workers are now earning more than $15 an hour on average for the first time in history, according to the Washington Post. Aldi is following in the footsteps of companies like Walmart, Costco and Chipotle, which all raised wages earlier this year. The tight labor market has led many companies to reassess the wages and benefits they offer workers in an effort to attract new talent and prevent existing workers from leaving the job.
